IHEEM MENTORING PROGRAMME


IHEEM’s Mentor scheme for 2024 aims to offer training and support, drawing on the extensive experience of members.


Intro and training detail A


s part of IHEEM’s continued commitment to supporting the


professional development and learning opportunities for its members, the Institute is proud to be launching an IHEEM Mentor scheme in 2024. The programme will provide members with the opportunity for professional guidance and support, with routes open for both mentors and mentees on a rolling basis. Training will be required of all IHEEM Mentors, encompassing the practical responsibilities of the role, and contributing to a shared culture and vision of positive and engaged mentorship across healthcare engineering and estate management. The first delivery of IHEEM Mentor training is due to take place in the coming months,


with a broad range of invaluable experience among members who are volunteering to join the programme. Formalising the structure of the mentoring scheme means that individuals involved can benefit from the full scope of membership and expertise offered across the Institute, with the potential to extend relationships beyond the sphere of immediate contacts. Whilst IHEEM will not have any direct


involvement in the nature or content of mentoring meetings past the point of facilitating pairings, the IHEEM Mentor training will provide an important and consistent foundation of skills and awareness for Institute mentors. Mentoring by its very nature is not a ‘one size fits all’ activity, and, as such, the nurturing of positive relationships and a supportive environment, through which both parties can share experience and develop, will be a core focus of the IHEEM Mentor training. Mentor-mentee pairings will be


determined based on alignment of skills and experience, and in agreement with both parties. An IHEEM Mentor code of conduct will be detailed in the mentor training and agreed upon by all participating members, offering mentees confidence in the process


and standards upheld by each individual mentor. The Institute will notify members when applications to be mentored via the programme are open.


MyIHEEM Mentoring functionality


A critical component of effective mentoring activity is record keeping of meetings, and the development of any objectives determined by the mentor and mentee. As part of the initiative, the soon-to-be-launched MyIHEEM Mentor record-keeping facility will allow both parties to confidentially record and edit this detail. The system has been developed to


fully integrate with the current MyIHEEM CPD recording system, meaning detail of mentoring records can be automatically pulled through to an individual’s CPD records. Crucial to party confidentiality, the CPD system draws only from fields referencing impersonal information entered on the MyMentor record (date, time spent etc.), meaning that fields containing the nature or content of conversations had will be excluded from CPD records. As with MyIHEEM CPD functionality, the MyIHEEM Mentor record-keeping system will be available exclusively to IHEEM members, as part of their member log in.


Mentoring overview


The general principles of mentoring and the benefits to which these relationships can lead will be familiar to many. However, the scope and quality of a partnership can be infinitely variable, being determined by the specific mentor-mentee pairing, meaning that outcomes, too, can range from concise and focused to broad-reaching and unexpected. The terms ‘coaching’ and ‘mentoring’


are often incorrectly used interchangeably. Coaching, and notably ‘pure coaching’, utilises skills in active listening, questioning, and re-framing to guide and encourage a coachee to make their own discoveries. While mentors can employ coaching skills when supporting a mentee, the activity of mentoring leans more into imparting specific knowledge, and using
