SIMON ADAMSON Director of Estates, Facilities, and Capital at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
n the vast and intricate network that is the NHS many dedicated individuals have devoted their lives to maintaining and enhancing the system. One such individual is Simon Adamson, the Director of Estates, Facilities, and Capital at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. His journey, and a commitment to excellence, are a testament to the values that underpin the NHS. Simon’s career began in 2000 when he embarked on a multi-craft engineering apprenticeship. It was during these formative years that he honed his skills and developed an understanding of the healthcare engineering field. These early experiences were vital, providing him with a solid foundation upon which he would build a distinguished career. His apprenticeship was not just about acquiring technical skills; it was an introduction to the values of being responsible, having pride in his work, and ensuring that the patient was always put first. These values would guide him through the different stages of his professional journey. The NHS, with its emphasis on patient care and community welfare, was the perfect place for Simon to apply and further develop these values. After completing his apprenticeship, Simon continued to advance his career within the NHS. With each role he took on, he demonstrated his commitment and an unrelenting drive to improve the environments within which healthcare services were delivered. His journey through the ranks was marked by a series academic and developmental accomplishments, each contributing to his growing reputation as an emerging senior leader in the NHS. Simon’s career development was significantly supported by the

Capital. In this role, he oversees the management of the physical environments in which the Trust operates. The responsibilities are vast, encompassing everything from the maintenance of existing facilities (including Health and Safety and Compliance and Governance), to the planning and execution of large capital projects. Under his leadership, these elements are managed with a keen eye for detail, ensuring that they contribute to the overall effectiveness of the healthcare services provided. Simon is deeply committed to raising the profile of the Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) profession within the NHS. He
believes that the work of EFM professionals is critical to the success of the NHS and the benefit of the community, and he works tirelessly to ensure that their contributions are recognised and valued. One of Simon’s core values is fairness and equality. He champions these principles within his workforce and beyond, striving to
create an inclusive and supportive environment for all employees. He understands that a diverse and equitable workforce is not only a moral imperative, but also essential for the effective functioning of the NHS. By promoting fairness and equality, Simon ensures that every member of his team can contribute to their fullest potential, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the Trust. Simon is a staunch advocate for the profession, constantly seeking ways to highlight its importance within the broader context of the NHS. He believes the EFM sector plays a crucial role in ensuring that healthcare environments are safe, efficient, and conducive to the delivery of high-quality care. Through his efforts, he aims to attract more talented individuals to the profession – from a more diverse pool of potential candidates. As Simon looks to the future, he is optimistic about the potential for further advancements in the EFM sector. He envisions a future where the role of EFM professionals is fully integrated into the strategic planning and decision-making processes of the NHS. Simon’s career is a story of dedication, passion, and leadership. From his early days as an engineering apprentice, to his current role as Director of Estates, Facilities, and Capital, he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence, and a deep-seated belief in the values of fairness and equality. Simon is currently President-Elect for the Institute, and will take over the role of President in October 2026.
