TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Insight

IHEEM PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION REVIEW TRAINING FOR ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS

Last month saw a further training session take place for Institute Professional Registration Reviewers following the Authorising Engineers Conference at Epsom Racecourse, offering a vital opportunity for knowledge sharing and a breadth of perspectives into registration from both the applicant’s and reviewer/interviewer’s standpoint.

A

s a dedicated body of Institute members, the IHEEM Membership and Registration Committee is

• Provide an open forum to discuss registration scenarios, and how they fit

assessment process, and the considerations required.

how it is possible to identify the most suitable grade and course for the individual applicant based upon career, experience, and qualifications.

tasked with application review, feedback, and interview – as required – of all applicants looking to become accredited with Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer, or Chartered Engineer status through the Institute. Against this backdrop, comprehensive training is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the registration process, with a continuing opportunity for learning, reflection, and development thereafter. Delivered by IHEEM Past-President, Greg Markham, also a serving member of the IHEEM Membership and Registration Committee, the full day training is designed to:

The trainee group represented a full range of understanding in professional registration review – from those with no previous involvement with the process, and newer to it, to those highly experienced in the process. As a result, the session offered a vital opportunity for knowledge sharing and a breadth of perspectives into registration from the point of view of both applicant and reviewer/interviewer. The session content has been carefully

developed to ensure that all reviewers are held to a high and consistent standard of conduct, and review approach, and share a common understanding of the purpose of professional review. In addition to in-depth training in the comprehensive technical report and engineering practice report processes, trainees received and shared experiences of developing effective

applicant-reviewer relationships, notably at interview stage. As trainer, Greg Markham, addressed the group on the day regarding candidate interview, saying: “It should be a conversation, not a test. As reviewers and interviewers this doesn’t mean compromising the standards required of the individual, but we should be looking to draw the best out of them, to support them towards their accreditation.”
