TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Future Leaders

continue to innovate, and recognise the positive real-world impact their work can have; these are our future leaders. Amy Lawrence, EngineeringUK’s Careers

and Competition Manager, summarises the importance and impact of The Big Bang Competition: “Young people champion The Big Bang Competition as a space where they can build on and present their own creative and innovative ideas whilst developing their skills and having fun. This year, we saw 349 projects being submitted, and a 29% increase in the number of young people taking part. From the young people taking part in this year’s Competition, we can see that we had significantly more girls entering than boys (data taken from competitors who completed their demographic data), a really positive trend. “We are delighted to have worked with IHEEM to host the Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare Engineering Award 2025. Over 200 competitors submitted projects focusing on health and wellbeing, all inspired by their passion to help people and improve access to healthcare across the world. These projects encompassed

everything from innovation in diagnostics and treatments, and advancement in healthcare services, to supporting people with their daily wellbeing, and making a positive impact across the full range of healthcare environments.

‘A unique opportunity’

Following a first and hugely successful year participating across The Big Bang Fair and Competition, IHEEM CEO, Pete Sellars, reflected: “Supporting aspiring healthcare

engineers into the relevant academic and career paths remains a key priority of the Institute. This year’s collaboration with EngineeringUK in its vital drive to bolster the workforce in STEM-related industries long into the future has offered a unique opportunity to engage with young people and share inspiring, relatable stories from the healthcare environment. We are proud to carry this working relationship forwards with a clear, shared vision, and look forward to being involved in The Big Bang in future years.”
