COMMENT COVER STORY

This way to P4 Cloud emergency lighting

P4, a leading UK emergency lighting specialist, and its FASTEL self-testing technology, have been ‘at the forefront of emergency lighting for over 30 years’.

The company ‘thrives on a culture of continuous innovation and desire to produce the most cost-effective, dependable, and compliant emergency lighting solutions’. P4 Cloud, launched in May, builds on the company’s proven self-testing and reporting systems with the addition of an intuitive, web-based customer user interface. P4 said: “It is the perfect solution for healthcare estates, as emergency lighting in multiple buildings can be managed from one centralised portal. System status, testing records, alerts, and reports, are all easily accessible. The Cloud is continuously updated, with emergency lighting test records retained for a minimum of four years. Data resilience is assured, as test records are stored locally on the P4 M-web controller unit, as well as the cloud.”

It added: “Existing customers will be pleased to know that we have ensured all existing M-web FWSD controller units are compatible with

Last month IHEEM held a well-attended Authorising Engineers Conference at Epsom Downs Racecourse. Topics covered included some of the Technical Platforms’ most recent work, a new ‘app’ for AEs to use as they conduct audits while out on hospital estates, which will also help EFM teams with compliance, and the importance of all existing and aspiring AEs, and indeed the wider IHEEM membership, undertaking regular CPD, and maintain up-to-date CPD records. Failure to do so could – several speakers explained – see them in breach of an Engineering Council mandate requiring all registrants to do this. It was emphasised, however, that CPD points can be gained in numerous ways – from speaking at conferences, to reading technical journals. To simplify maintaining an up-to-date CPD

compliance pressures, the only way forward surely must be embracing technological advancements and simplifying today’s challenges. All this is backed by our commitment to quality, and providing customers with the evidence that by choosing P4, they’re choosing the best.”

P4 secured its first BSI Kitemark in 2019 for self-testing emergency lighting systems, followed by the BSI Mark of Trust Kitemark for IOT Devices for its M-Web controller system. The company is accepted into Made in Britain due to its commitment to UK manufacturing, which it says ‘minimises the risk of materials supply chain issues’. It also holds LIA and ICEL membership, ISO 9001,

ISO 14001, and BAFE certification. Steve Rham

added: “The UK is soon to adopt a revised version of BS5266 Pt 1. This will support higher illumination levels, with new areas covered, and an enhanced focus

P4 Cloud (a firmware update may be required). UK Sales and Marketing director, Steve Rham, said: “Thirteen years ago I applied to P4 for a position as an Area Sales Manager. My decision to join was powered by the belief that what P4 offered was of real value to its customers. Self-testing emergency lighting assists compliance, efficiency, and peace of mind, and means more buildings are ultimately safer for occupiers. With financial and

record, IHEEM offers members its online MyCPD system, which is accessible via their IHEEM website login. MyCPD, and the system’s workings, were discussed in detail in a joint presentation in Epsom by IHEEM COO, Tania Davies, and Council member, James Chadwick. Designed to be easy to use, the ‘application’ was developed to enable members to capture both the quantitative and qualitative areas of their CPD activities. It not only allows easy capture of reflective learning, with quick uploading of support evidence, but also offers members the ability to share their CPD records with other professional bodies for review. Te conference focused strongly on the need

to ensure that all AEs, APs, and CPs possess the competence, experience, and expertise to properly fulfil their roles in such safety-critical areas as medical gases, water, electrical, and fire safety, and decontamination. IHEEM’s President, Alison Ryan, noted that IHEEM is keen both to attract new members for its Technical Platforms, and to boost the number of IHEEM-registered AEs. She also announced that IHEEM is launching a new Mechanical Technical Platform (MTP) to cover mechanical engineering aspects not already covered by the other Platforms, which is seeking members (see page 9 in this month’s Institute News). AEs play a fundamental role in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of hospital equipment and services, while the Technical Platforms seek to be the ‘go-to’ for EFM professionals requiring specialist engineering advice and expertise. TP members also contribute to the development of new healthcare standards, guidance, and regulations. IHEEM members interested in joining one of the Technical Platforms, or working toward AE registration, are strongly encouraged to explore the opportunities with the Institute.
