IFHE NEWS IFHE launches global healthcare energy awards

The IFHE is launching its first ever energy awards programme to honour healthcare facilities for reducing their energy use.

The programme was announced at IFHE’s 50th anniversary at the 26th Congress in January 2021, hosted by Italy, which focused on ‘Global Climate Action in Pandemic Times’. Watch the recorded announcement at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=MfClyL_cnmI

Any healthcare facility with a five per cent or greater energy reduction, measured from 2019 as the baseline, and 2021 as the performance year, will be eligible for recognition. ‘Best in Country’ winners, and a ‘Best in World’ winner, will also be recognised during IFHE’s Annual Congress in September 2022 in Toronto.

The IFHE said: “Organisations with multiple sites can earn recognition for each that is eligible. By participating, facilities can better track their energy performance, celebrate their improvements, and join colleagues worldwide in working towards a healthier, more sustainable future for all. We know that climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century, and that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says we must reduce aggregate emissions by 45 per cent from 2010 levels by 2030, achieving net zero by 2050. This programme represents one more important way that IFHE is committing to global climate action, and aligns with our new Environmental Sustainability Policy.”

healthcare facilities worldwide, we are very excited to host the first Global Healthcare Energy Awards. We certainly encourage healthcare organisations around the world to participate in these exciting awards.”

The awards application process involves uploading at least two years of energy consumption data into a free app, called M+Energy (available for both web and mobile). Organisations that already have their data in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager can automatically upload it into M+Energy. Users can also upload their energy data manually, or via a spreadsheet template. By creating an account in the M+Energy app, users can also: n See a high-level view of their healthcare system’s energy and water performance.

n Identify sites with the highest energy use to help prioritise work.

n See weather-normalised energy use intensity, and score from ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.

n Compare performance between individual sites or groups of sites over custom time periods.

n Export charts to PDF or JPEG for easy sharing.

An evolving international programme

Since the 26th International Federation of Healthcare Engineering Congress, IFHE 2020, held ‘digitally’ from 24-28 January this year, IFHE has ‘not stopped’, and the activities of the Exco continue to evolve, reports the Federation’s President, Daniela Pedrini.

“In the first half of the year,” she says, “IFHE has held regular ‘virtual’ meetings of its Executive Committee, on 23 February, 6 April, 20 May, and 22 July.” Other notable landmarks have included:

n The IFHE’s ‘Environmental Sustainability Policy’ document has been updated, approved, and sent to Council members. https://www.ifhe.info/news/enviromental-sustainability-policy

n IFHE and IFHE-EU contributed to the drafting of a best practice guide for healthcare estates, A healthcare engineering roadmap for delivering net zero carbon: https://www.ifhe.info/news/ a-healthcare-engineering-roadmap-for-delivering-net-zero-

carbon The roadmap outlined in this document, if diligently applied, will form a significant part of the required changes as they apply to the NHS and public sector estate.

n IFHE has launched its first Energy Awards programme to honour and recognise healthcare facilities for reducing their energy use (see story above).

n IFHE has participated in many webinars with its representatives. Daniela Pedrini added: “Looking ahead to the rest of 2021, and the 9th IFHE-EU Congess will take place from 27-29 October 2021 in Gijón (coinciding with the 38th Congress of the Spanish Association, AEIH). The IFHE and the Mexican Society of Architects Specialized in Health (SMAES), meanwhile, are organising an event entitled ‘IFHE International Prospective Seminar 2021’ and the SMAES 18th International Congress, ‘Hospital del Futuro’, in a mixed format (virtual and face-to-face) in Mexico City from 6-10 November 2021.”
