MTX celebrates a decade of year-on-year growth
After ‘an incredibly difficult time for global businesses’, Modern Methods of Construction healthcare building specialist, MTX Contracts, is celebrating a decade of year-on-year growth, with 2021 revenues of over £90 million. This year will also see MTX complete a further flagship project – its construction of a five-storey Critical Care Unit at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital is the largest project in the company’s history. The scheme follows last year’s completion of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital project, one of its most efficient builds – with what would have typically been a three-year project cut to just one.
MD, David Hartley, said: “In a year that saw increased demand across the healthcare industry, and pressures placed on funding and speed of delivery, Modern Methods of Construction have provided a fast-track solution with minimal disruption. We have been incredibly lucky that, through flexible working, we have not had to furlough any of our team, and, more recently, we’ve expanded our workforce to meet the increased demand for healthcare facility construction. We’ve also managed to achieve an accident frequency rate of 0.01 per cent – exceptionally low for the industry.” Seventy-eight per cent of MTX’s turnover is spent with local supply chain partners, and 12% per cent of all profits reinvested into community initiatives. David Hartley added: “The projects we
work on provide so much value to the communities in which they operate, and we want to reflect that in the work we do and play our role in both the future of our sector and our region.”
MTX is a privately-owned, Cheshire- based, construction and engineering company ‘specialising in innovative Modern Methods of Construction to deliver fast-track building solutions to the NHS and the private healthcare sectors UK-wide’. It says its fast-track construction methods reduce time on site ‘by up to 60%’.

Remodelled Barnsley Hospital ED completed
Illingworth & Gregory (I&G) has completed refurbishment works to extend the Emergency Department and Adult Majors Unit at Barnsley Hospital. The works follow the recent completion of the Children’s Emergency Department and Assessment Unit which form part of Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s investment in a series of improvements across its Gawber Road, Barnsley site. Alison Fearns, the Trust’s Project manager, said: “Completion of the refurbishment and expansion of the ED and Adult Majors Unit is yet another key milestone in our wider programme to transform our service delivery. Phase 3 provides the Emergency Department with an additional nine cubicles, including one as an assessment hub. This new department will massively improve our patients’ experience.”
Phase three works included a strip-out and a new layout to accommodate improved nursing stations, new mechanical, ventilation, and electrical installations, and data systems. I&G MD, Sean Henderson, said: “Although this phase has been a lot shorter than phase two, it has been far more challenging, due to the clinical services around the area also being under refurbishment. We have also had to work adjacent to the existing ED, which has remained operational throughout – necessitating a lot of works outside normal working hours.”
