A Royal honour for Northern Ireland Council member
Nigel Keery, IHEEM Northern Ireland Branch Council representative, and in his ‘day job’ Head of Estates Operations at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, attended Windsor Castle on 14 February with his family to receive an OBE from King Charles. He was accompanied on what he describes as a ‘very special day’ by his wife, Mandy, son, Gregory, and daughter, Natasha. He said: “It was a wonderful experience going to Windsor and meeting the King. I’m greatly honoured to have received the OBE for Services to Public Health.” While he has had a long career in healthcare engineering, and is well known for his enthusiasm and commitment, he believes that key to him receiving the honour was his work during the pandemic as part of the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust Estates & Facilities team, developing, and having specially manufactured in Northern Ireland, eight oxygen concentrators at the request of Northern Ireland’s Department of Health (HSCNI). This followed the identification of ‘weaknesses in oxygen delivery and infrastructure’ at a number of hospitals in the region following a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. Three of the concentrators were subsequently flown to India to boost oxygen supply at regional hospitals there. The cargo on the plane that took them from Belfast International Airport to Delhi on 7 May 2021 also included 1,000 CPAP systems from a British manufacturer. The massive Antonov An-124 is said to be the world’s biggest cargo plane. Nigel said: “On arriving through the
King Henry VIII gate at Windsor Castle, I passed through nine rooms, enjoying the magnificent surroundings of the State apartments before arriving in the King’s Drawing Room. We were then directed through the Throne Room to the Grand Reception Room, where I received the medal from King Charles. Getting the OBE was a great personal honour, but I’m also pleased that with IHEEM Past- President, Paul Fenton, getting an MBE in the 2021 New Year’s Honours, and my receiving an OBE in the Queen’s 2022 Birthday Honours, the healthcare engineering and estate management profession is getting some well-warranted public recognition. “Not only was it great to be able to visit
Windsor Castle,” Nigel Keery continued, “but I enjoyed the short chat I had with His Highness. On asking me how I was, I replied: ‘A little nervous, sir, but not as nervous as I imagine you will be on your coronation!’ The King chuckled: ‘Not at all!’ It was great that he also knew a lot about the Belfast Trust, the hospitals I work at, and my work during the pandemic on oxygen concentrators.”
Wynne Evans will be the after-dinner speaker and award presenter at IHEEM’s Gala Dinner, part of The Institute’s Wales Regional Conference 2023, which takes place from 11-12 May at Cardiff City Stadium (with the Dinner at the city’s Coal Exchange Hotel on 11 May). Sometimes known as ‘Gio Compario’ – the spoof opera star from the Go Compare adverts – he is a professionally trained opera singer, with over 25 years’ experience. A principal tenor with Welsh National Opera, his work has taken him to major opera houses worldwide. He is also a regular presenter on BBC Radio Wales, and has presented on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM, and starred in his own
‘Spoof opera star’ special guest in Cardiff TV series on BBC One Wales, ‘Wynne
At the Deep End’. IHEEM said: “We hope you can join us to celebrate the great work of NHS Wales colleagues.” To view the award categories, and the conference agenda, and to register your place, visit
