SANDY DUDGEON

one of whom is Hazel Peplinski, chief executive at Perth, and she remembers the exploits of Gayle Warning with a crystal-clear memory. “The year he won at Aintree, it came down to me

to drive the lorry home as there was a big debate as to who had drunk the least champagne!” she said. “We did a lot of hooting and tooting and I recall myself and my sister Claire boasting at the service station when we stopped for fuel that we had a winner from Aintree on board. “Because he was dad’s pride and joy, you were

honoured if you got to ride him at home. One day Claire was riding his work horse and I was on Paddy with the instruction just to do some road work but we thought we knew better and we went into a stubble field containing lines of unbaled straw.

“One of them got a fright and off they went flat

out. I was jumping these lines two at a time and he was taking off a million miles away and I was sitting

there thinking ‘I have absolutely no control’. It was the only time I’ve tried to talk to a horse – I was saying ‘whoa Paddy’ over and over but it had no effect whatsoever!” Sandy was appointed Senior Steward of the

Jockey Club in the summer of 2019. “When racing is working well it’s great,” he said. “I

try to say to everybody when discussions are taking place about horsemen and racecourses for example is that, from our point of view, everyone in the Jockey Club is a horseman. “The thing I love most about racing is that is

doesn’t matter who you meet or why you are there, you can have a great chat – we are all there for the same reason, to enjoy a great day’s racing. It will be great to get everyone back as soon as we are allowed and it is safe to do so. I actually believe in the hope that there will be quite an upsurge in crowds which will be great for the courses.” To find out more about The Jockey Club (click here)
