JON BARNETT
spectators to sporting events from May 17, with full houses from June 21. “At the fixtures that are from May 21 to the end of June – six in all – will be, based on what we know now, a limited crowd of 4,000, based on government guidelines.
“Our membership will have first dibs on those
fixtures – a really nice opportunity for them is that it will effectively be a private race day for members. “Essentially, they will have the racecourse to themselves – a members-only event. “They will experience something they never have
before – and probably will never be able to again.” Politicians warn the country is not yet out of the
woods, but there is light among the trees. He predicts a further £1million impact during
the coming season, but Barnett is relishing his racecourse role, albeit 18 months later than planned.
“I’ve been here for a year and we haven’t actually
raced with a crowd yet, but I think 2021 is going to be a very special year,” he says. “The other big step is getting your regular ticket
buyer back through the gates and letting them feel that, ‘isn’t this great?’ feeling again. “The challenge I face is that Ascot’s on the
doorstep, Newbury’s on the doorstep, Epsom’s on the doorstep, Fontwell’s on the doorstep, Brighton’s on the doorstep. “They’re all racecourses, all delivering racing. “We have to do it differently – making sure people
who come to Goodwood have an amazing day – to make it stand out from the crowd.” If you see Barnett on Stewards’ Cup day, feel free
to tell him what works – and what doesn’t. Just don’t ask him who will win the big race. To find out more about Goodwood (click here)
