pretty good, I’m not so good’ so I decided, when I finished my accounting, to go to Michael Dickinson. I was very lucky to get two weeks with him and ended up staying for five months. “It was the experience of a lifetime – not just about the horses but the fact there were 16 licensed jockeys on the staff at that time. Because of my stay there, I came in for the second half of Peaty Sandy’s career. The horse’s permit-holder – the wonderful Helen Hamilton – wanted an amateur to ride him when Geordie Dun turned professional. We won an Eider Chase and five races one season and so that all helped me when I was riding Gayle Warning.
