Plastics Strategy pledges show shortfall in demand for recyclate

The European Commission has made a preliminary assessment of the pledges it has received in response to the EU Plastics Strategy which shows a shortfall on the demand side compared with commitments from the recycling sector. It asked for voluntary pledges when announcing the strategy in January.

Pledges indicate at least 10m tpa of recycled plastics could be supplied by 2025, enabling the EU to reach its target for that year. But the assessment shows that on the demand side, only 5m tpa are expected to be used in new products, based on the pledges so far received. Frans Timmermans, First

Vice-President responsible for sustainable develop- ment, said: “To get to a circular plastics economy, it

New 100% rPET water bottle

Berlin-based start-up drinks brand Share is the first beverage producer in Germany to sell its water in PET bottles made of 100% recyclate, according to KHS, which was involved in the bottle’s design and development. The product is on sale at Germany’s REWE super-

market chain and DM drug store. In 2019 Share plans to fill water into about a million bottles a month made entirely of recycled PET, which it says would save over 200 tpa of plastic waste. Share is a social food brand which works on the principle that for each purchased product (water or other products such as hand soap and organic nut bars), the company provides people in need with a similar product. www.khs.com

which should be the next steps to further boost the uptake of recycled plastics and close the gap between supply and demand.” By the end of October

the Commission had received over 60 pledges, which it is reviewing in more

detail to analyse their impact per plastic types on supply and demand aspects. It said the main pledges received came from plastics recyclers, industry associations for expanded polystyrene and brand owners mainly using PET packaging.

It will publish a detailed assessment in the first quarter of 2019 to help identify gaps between supply and demand. This will help “guide future actions, including the ongoing assessment of regulatory or economic incentives in targeted sectors such as the automo- tive, construction and packaging sectors that were announced in the Plastics Strategy”, it said. A first stakeholder meeting is planned for early 2019. http://europa.eu/rapid

German processors take recyclate

A study of German plastics manufacturers shows their use of a sizeable amount of recycled plastics. The study found that 1.8 million tonnes of recyclates accounted for 12.3% of 14.4 million tonnes total of plastics processed in 2017. The amount of plastic waste was around 6.2m tonnes. The study was carried out by Conversio Market & Strategy for GKV, IK, PlasticsEurope Deutschland and other groups. www.conversio-gmbh.com
