and produces plastic granu- lates as customised com- pound or as clean and pure regranulate, which is repro- cessed as a service. The company sorts, cleans, shreds, grinds, granulates and compounds to supply a pure regranulate that is practically equivalent to virgin material. At the same time, the com- pany relies on a sustainable recycling concept for an optimal material cycle. The Swiss manufacturer


says that it employs new technology in the reprocess- ing lines to ensure the highest quality and process optimisa- tion, and this year installed the Purity Scanner Advanced from Sikora for online inspection and sorting of plastic material. “For our technical polymers and high performance polymers – such as fluoroplastics, PEEK, polyamide, polyethylene or polypropylene – this quality approach was relevant for supplying first class material,” says Bruno Ofner, CEO of Minger Kunststofftechnik. According to Ofner, there are several methods for material sorting on the market. However, the Purity Scanner Advanced convinced on the grounds of its advanced


measuring principle and, above all, due to its sorting of pure material. Minger adds that it is the first company using this technology for recycling.

During the production of recycled granulate, the plastic material can be contaminated by black spots, foreign particles or fine metal abrasion. These impurities are eliminated by the Purity Scanner Advanced. The inspection and sorting system combines X-ray and optical technologies and detects contamination inside the granulate, as well as on its surface. This means that trans- parent, diffuse and coloured materials can be reliably inspect- ed for 100% purity, with contami- nated granulates detected and automatically sorted. According to the company, the result of the


purity testing is significant because, in some cases, unsuitable material can be made usable again. The material does not contain foreign particles and the quality is improved up to 100%, says Ofner, who claims that the Purity Scanner Advanced is cur- rently the most accurate sorting equipment available on the market. With the optical sorting systems used so far, generally only up to 96% purity can be guaranteed, with impurities remain- ing undetected in the pellet, he says. The Sikora device is combined with an intelli-


gent processor system, which analyses and visualises sorting. Minger says that statistical evaluation of the contamination detected by the optical cameras and X-ray camera, sorted by number, size and frequency as well as an image gallery of contaminated granulates, is of particular importance. All information is saved and is avail- able in Excel format, as well as an image file. In addition, data such as possible duration of the


order, material type, throughput and rejection rate is recorded. In this way full traceability is possible after a project has been completed. Ofner adds that the production data is used as reference for future orders. The information is forwarded to customers as a final report, allowing technical transparency about the product and the produc- tion process.
