Start-up of French pioneer

TotalEnergies has launched France’s first chemical plastics recycling plant at its Grandpuits site southeast of Paris. The 15,000 tonnes/yr facility is using Plastic Energy’s patented TAC technology, which transforms hard-to-recycle plastic waste from French households currently being sent to landfill or incineration, into a synthetic oil through a pyrolysis process. The pyrolysis oil is then treated as petrochemical feedstock and used as a substitute for fossil fuels. “The start-up of the first advanced plastics recycling plant in France is an important milestone in the conversion of our Grandpuits site into a zero-crude complex,” said Valérie Goff, Senior Vice President, Renewables, Fuels & Chemicals at TotalEnergies. https://totalenergies.com

Eurokey to open new UK recycling facility

Reconomy has announced that its Eurokey business is set to open a £20m, 138,000 sq ft plastic packag- ing recycling facility in Corby, UK, near to its existing sorting facility in Kettering. At full capacity, the site will be able to recycle 38,000 tonnes of plastic material annually. The site will also create over 30 new jobs, stimulating local economic growth, said Reconomy. Construction of the

Corby plant is nearing completion with the plant scheduled to be fully operational in the second half of 2026 when it will become one of the country’s largest dedicated plastic recycling plants focused on supporting supermarkets, grocers, and retailers, with closed-loop recycling systems. “We are very proud to

this critical time,” said Zubair Bajwa, Operations Director at Eurokey. “For over 30 years, our business has helped leading UK super- markets and retailers maximise the recycling potential of their plastic material, and this new site will allow us to go even further in delivering circular solutions for our customers.” The site will handle multiple grades of plastic material that have been pre-sorted at Eurokey’s

Kettering facility which opened in 2022 and is capable of reprocessing 70,000 tonnes of plastics waste and 200,000 tonnes of carboard material per year. The close proximity between the Corby plant and the Kettering sorting facility will reduce export dependency, cut transporta- tion costs and emissions, said Reconomy. https://eurokeyrecycling.com www.reconomy.com

Support for PS recycling in North America

The Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA) has released a comprehensive study examining end-market land- scapes and recovery pathways for four major polystyrene resin types across the US and Canada. Conducted in partnership with

Resource Recycling Systems (RRS), the study identified 126 companies operating a total of 169 facilities across 30 US states and four Canadian provinces that are either actively receiving, processing, or reclaiming

some form of polystyrene, including general purpose polystyrene (GPPS), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), expanded polystyrene (EPS), and extruded polystyrene (XPS). Justin Riney, PSRA Chair, said the

study provides the critical insights and data needed for discussion with stakeholders and inform strategic investments in the collection and recovery infrastructure. PSRA also announced a collabora- tion with Foam Cycle and the Nash-

ville Department of Waste Services (NWS), to significantly expand EPS recycling. It said it assisted with the donation and installation of Foam Cycle’s patented foam collection and densification system at NWS-operated East Convenience Center in Nashville. All formats of EPS will be collected, and then densified with Foam Cycle’s equipment so that it can be transport- ed to EFP’s EPS manufacturing facility in La Vergne, TN. https://psrecycling.org
