EXHIBITION PREVIEW | K2025 – MATERIALS
Roght: WIS says its ‘Walk of Waste’ shows the journey from used plastics to finished recyclates
WIS Kunststoffe will present several certified recyclates for food use, which were developed through technical collaboration. A highlight of the show is a new process for making food-grade polypropylene (PP) recyclate from post-consumer food packaging. In collaboration with KraussMaffei Extrusion, WIS has developed the scalable process that has already received FDA approval for food-contact applications. “The combination of process know-how,
state-of-the-art equipment, and close collaboration was key to this,” said Daniel Römhild, head of development at WIS. A twin-screw extruder used in the process enables gentle processing and ensures high-quali- ty recyclate output. The process can be integrated into existing workflows and creates opportunities for post-consumer recycling in the food sector, it says.
David Rapp, team leader for process engineer-
ing recycling at KraussMaffei Extrusion, added: “Our ZE BluePower twin-screw extruder offers gentle, efficient material processing – a critical factor for recyclate quality.” WIS Kunststoffe’s portfolio also includes regran-
ulates based on PP and PE that are heat-resistant, odour-optimised, and colourable. These meet the demands of various industries, including cosmet- ics, packaging, automotive and toys, it says. It also offers regranulates that meet the require-
ments of the US FDA for food contact applications. It says it is the first European recycler to receive FDA approval for recycled polypropylene (rPP) for “all types of food”.
This provides validation for applications in sensitive areas such as food packaging and medical technology, it says. Another highlight of the exhibition is its Sch-
neckenputzer cleaning compound, made from recyclate and demonstrated twice daily on an Engel injection moulding machine. The compound removes residue from screws and barrels, reduces downtime and allows clean transitions between colours and materials. It also claims up to 50% lower consumption than competing products. The compound processes with minimal smoke and odour, says the company. The company’s stand also features the ‘Walk of
Waste’ – transparent display boxes embedded in the floor that show the journey from used plastic products to finished recyclates.
