short reaction time, the method provides a considerable reduction of toxic waste compared to traditional methods. The method can be scaled-up to industrial purposes without substan- tial investments, and it has already raised a lot of interest in industry. Braskem has found a high-profile use for its
Right: Braskem has supplied Green Plastic based on a renewable polymer made from sugarcane to Botanika for a new line of gardening vases
Green Plastic PE made from sugarcane products in Lego’s 2018 range of “botani- cal” elements, such as trees, bushes and leaves, to be used with its toy building blocks. Lego said the elements have been tested to ensure the plant- based PE meets the group’s high standards for quality and safety. Tim Brooks, Vice President, Environmental Responsibility at the Lego Group, said: “Lego products have always been about providing high quality play experiences giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play. Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appear- ance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene.” Braskem claims to be the world’s largest bioplastics producer, making its bio-based PE from sugarcane products at the Triunfo Petrochemical Complex in Rio Grande do Sul with annual produc- tion capacity of 200,000t. The group has also supplied Green Plastic to Botanika for a new line of gardening vases. With a modern design, Botanika vases can be used for decorative, ornamental or indoor gardening purposes. In addition, the vases were created with a smart irrigation system and water reservoir for self-irrigation, which provides autonomy for up to four weeks without the need for a person to water the plants. Because they are sealed, they still have a system that protects against
the proliferation of mosquitoes. Mais Polímeros, a distributor of Green Polyethylene for Braskem since 2016, supported Botanika in this project for the development of the product with resin from a renewable origin. Biome Bioplastics has developed a takeaway beverage cup for coffee, made from plant-based sources. The bioplastic materials for disposable cups and lids are fully compostable and recyclable, while still performing like conventional plastics under heat and stress. Over the past five years, Biome Bioplastics has
developed a range of biopolymers for coffee cups, lids and coffee pods based on natural and renewable resources including plant starches and tree by-products, such as cellulose. The company says that the cup is disposable either in a paper recycling stream or food waste stream. In appropriate composting conditions, the cups and lids will become carbon dioxide and water within three months.
