produced in a single cavity on a Nova5eT 180 model. Features of the new IMM include a footprint up to 15% smaller than previous series, a new flat clamp mechanism that generates uniform and optimum contact pressure, highly dynamic toggle for faster open/close speeds with automatic force adjustment, an injection unit designed for reduced heat-up time and shorter plasticising times, and a Tact V controller that is easier to connect with other devices and allows for precise overlapping machine movements for reduced cycle times. The features make the machine well suited for handling PLA in a packaging application. Negri Bossi says it partnered with Spanish mould maker Molmasa Industrial de Moldes to make the special mould for the PLA bottle demon- stration. An in-mould labelling (IML) system, with labels from the supplier La Prensa, was incorpo- rated into the automated system. Negri Bossi says that in March one of its clients,

tion portfolio during the pandemic when it set up a new moulding line in 2020 to produce PPE safety glasses and visors. According to Complastic’s business plan, annual production of the food tray packaging is set at about 6m pieces, and is destined for companies operating in large-scale retail, says Negri Bossi. Nissei also presented a PLA and wood flour composite material at the K2022 tradeshow that demonstrated what it sees as practical applications for 100% plant-based composite materials. The wood flour is made from lumber and scrapped wood harvested from Nagano Prefecture where Nissei is based. The wood is combined with a
heat-resistant PLA material. Nissei produced a demonstration cutlery set at the show that it said is compliant with Japan and EU food contact safety standards. At the previous K show in 2019, Nissei demon-
strated a thin-wall transparent PLA processing technology that improves the fluidity and mould releasability of PLA in a thin-wall moulding applica- tion. The technology was demonstrated in the production of a champagne glass made from PLA with a wall thickness of 0.65 mm. The approach represents a solution to reduce plastic waste of disposable thin-walled containers, say officials at Nissei.
Nissei says a growing trend towards environ- mentally friendly manufacturing has re-started attention in a Pulp Injection Moulding (PIM) technology that produces packaging from pulp and starch. Nissei partnered twenty years ago with the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Industrial Science and PIM material maker Daiho Industrial to develop the PIM technology. Machinery supplier KraussMaffei expanded its
portfolio of combination compounding and injection moulding machinery with the develop- ment of its Direct Compounding Injection Mould- ing (DCIM) process. The process development is a solution to rising demand for sustainable products made of recyclates, in parallel with demand for energy-saving and cost-effective manu- facturing solutions. KraussMaffei says DCIM can deliver materials savings of up to fifty percent to packaging applications. The DCIM technology is similar to the company’s existing Injection Moulding Compounding (IMC) process in that it combines compounding and injection into a one-step process,
