MACHINERY | CORRUGATED PIPE
Pulsating performance At the recent NPE exhibition in the USA, Canadian corrugated pipe specialist Corma showed a large pipe sample made on its Pulsating Corrugator. The pipe had an outer diameter of 2,000mm, and was made from recycled HDPE. The Pulsating Corrugator is well suited to making large diameter corrugated pipe and is very space efficient due to its unique mould block return system, says the company. It incorporates several new patented technologies. “Pipe producers have been waiting for a large diameter corrugated pipe solution to compete – and win – against spirally wound plastic pipes and concrete pipes,” said the company. ments for storm water management. Due to soil contamination from the maintenance of rail cars on the site by CNRS over more than 70 years, the lot had to be decontaminated to a suitable degree, but still remains corrosive. Contractor Pavage Dion chose Solflo Max HDPE
pipe – from local supplier Soleno – because of its durability, light weight and savings from efficient on-site installation. More than 2,300m (7546ft) of Solflo pipes and Solflo Max – ranging from 150mm (6in) to 750mm (30in) in diameter – were installed. Because HDPE is chemically inert it will not react with the contamination in the soil on site and has a longer lifespan than reinforced concrete pipe (RCP). According to PPI, HDPE is resistant to corrosion, abrasion, de-icing salts and vibration, ensuring the sustainability of infrastructure. “The conditions found at this site would have
greatly reduced the lifespan of concrete if it was used for this project,” said Daniel Currence, director of engineering for PPI’s corrugated plastic pipe division. “Using HDPE pipe enabled Pavage Dion to ensure the sustainable integrity of the sealed, watertight system.” It was important for water to stay in the pipeline – and equally important that no water with possible contamination from the surrounding soil be able to infiltrate into the pipeline, he said. Additionally, the pipe used meets ASTM standards for F405 and F2306, and complies with relevant standards. In a separate project, steel-reinforced PE (SRPE)
Duromaxx pipes from Soleno were installed in St Eustache, Quebec in order to prevent water overflow from a residential sewer system. It allowed temporary retention of large amounts of water, and so prevented discharge into the municipal sewer system during heavy rain. The contractor installed 480m of SRPE pipe, allowing approximately 1,665 cubic metres of storage.

that are half the weight – at double the output rate – of spiral wound plastic pipes in the same stiffness class. “The 2,000mm pipe sample shown at NPE is just the beginning,” said Corma. “We are looking to expand the pipe size range of the Pulsating Corru- gator up to 3,000 mm/120 inches in the future.”
Unicor expands in Asia Tien Phong, one of the largest pipe producers in Vietnam with around 100 extrusion lines, has taken delivery of a new corrugated pipe production line from Unicor of Germany. Since 2014, Tien Phong has been producing double layer pipe from 150 to 800mm ID on two corrugator lines supplied by a Chinese manufac- turer. However, due to rising quality requirements and productivity demands, the company decided to make further investments. “We developed a technical concept for a combi
profile covering PP SN8, PP SN12 and PE SN4 in one forming block with double layer in-line cuff,” said Unicor.
Unicor has now supplied Tien Phong with a UC 1200/9 iV with parking station. Using the machine, Tien Phong will be able to produce eight pipe sizes in the 200-1000mm ID range, for each of the three different product types. The complete pipe range on the UC 1200/9 iV will then consist of 24 different products, said Unicor. Tien Phong’s headquarters and main factory are in Haiphong, Vietnam’s third largest city that is around two hours from the capital, Hanoi.
