slide independently along the whole length. An offset work station is also free to move along
the frame and includes a welding machine, drill – which guarantees a centred hole in the middle of the pipe – two control panels and power supply, says the company. The work station’s trolley system, whose motion
is controlled by a potentiometer, allows easy operations during the movement, drilling and welding phases, says Ritmo. The machine is equipped with two anti-tilt systems at the sides. Saddle sockets are available for different brands

New Zealand farmer Alistair Hay’s bale feeder is made from plastic pipes, rather than steel
Food for thought
Sometimes, joining plastic pipes together has nothing to do with water transport, and more to do with providing food. New Zealand farmer Alistair Hay has developed a new design of bale feeder – a large container for hay bales, for feeding livestock. These are traditionally made from metal, but are so heavy that they must be moved around by a tractor. Hay came up with a design that used different types of plastic pipe – resulting in a feeder that weighed just 35kg, and could be rolled around by hand. “We had to mess around to get the first units right, but it all came together when we discovered butt fusion welding,” he told Dairy News in New Zealand. The support rings of the feeders are made from MDPE pipe, while the uprights are made from PP pipe that is otherwise used as irrigation pipe. They are available in various sizes, for different animals, and will outlast conventional steel units, he said.
HDPE, PP pipes and fittings for the transportation of gas, water and other fluids under pressure from 125 to 355mm. It is designed to work to welding standard ISO 21307 High Pressure. The unit has a removable control panel with
data-logging, a memory of up to 4,000 welding reports and GPS traceability. There is also a USB port for welding reports, data downloads and firmware upgrades. There is a removable machine body, meaning it can work in tight spaces. It also uses Ritmo’s patented quick-release Smartlock system. There are also two hydraulic rollers for pipe loading and unloading.
