compatible with the company’s HP JF5600 Series 3D printers. This material is made at Evonik’s plant in Marl, Germany using 100% renewable energy sources. Lehmann & Voss (Lehvoss) produces the
Luvoprint range which includes 3d printing compounds based on engineering thermoplastics or ETP blends. These include: eco PC/ABS, which offers good dimensional stability, processability; eco PA 6 for parts which need high impact strength, increased abrasion and wear resistance; eco PPS for flame retardant parts with high chemi- cal resistance; and PESU for flame retardant parts that need high mechanical strength and good thermal stability. All of the eco grades have a low carbon footprint, said the company. The compounds have been extensively tested on the most common industrial printing machines, said Lehvoss at the JEC World event in Paris earlier this year. It said it will help companies using its materials to make the change from traditional manufacturing to 3D printing. Luvoprint is designed for fused granule fabrica- tion – a specialist 3D printing process which uses granules instead of filaments or powders. Typically, Lehvoss said, the materials could be used to make moulds fixtures and supports in high temperature and pressure applications found in autoclaves.
Green grades
In the sustainability sphere, NatureWorks has launched Ingeo 3D300 PLA material, which the company describes as its fastest printing grade and which “provides users with precision and surface quality enabling efficient production without compromising durability”. NatureWorks said that it is possible to print up to 300 mm/sec consistently without using any performance-enhancing additives. The optically clear material simplifies colouring and colour matching. This means the grade can be accurately coloured, it said. The company added that Ingeo 3D300 has minimal stringing and good bridging length at high printing speeds. Moreover, because the material gives fast print times and does not need to be compounded, turnaround times and operation- al costs can be lower for users. which need to be radiologically opaque without using lead. The new material, available as pellets, enables users to produce components which are precise, dense and completely lead-free. Originally developed for injection molding, the
material – which contains tungsten for radiological opacity – has been used with a 3D printing system from Italy’s 3DKG. Lati3Dlab said that developing a 3D printing process for Latigray pellets will enable the material to be used in small-lot applications, where the cost of producing an injection mould would be too high. 3D printing also gives manufac- turers greater flexibility and shorter production times. The proprietary process enables direct printing without filament. Starting from pellets, the propri- etary process doses the correct amount of molten material directly from a specialised extruder head. The process has been used successfully with Latigray 82-03-AM CW/95 a PA 12 polymer loaded with 95% tungsten. This grade was chosen because it has the right material properties and a density close to 10 kg/dm³. Latigray has been used to produce collimator
supports, components which hold the apparatus to make X-rays parallel, for example. These supports were dimensionally accurate, compact, mechani- cally robust and gave equivalent x-ray shielding to the part in lead. As well as pellets, Latigray 82-03-AM CW/95 is available as a filament for FFF printing.
