the two polyolefin phases. This leads to a higher, more stable melt viscosity and hence smoother plastics processing,” the company said. Another product, Licocene PE MA 4351, works as a cou- pling agent for organic or inorganic fillers in rHDPE; Licocene PP MA 6452 serves this purpose in rPP.
Bio-based modifiers The Compound Company, headquartered in The Netherlands, supplies compatibilisers and coupling agents, formerly known as Exxelor but rebranded as Yparex from March this year. Modifiers include bio-based materials, such as Yparex RENEW 0H17 bio-based compatibiliser, based on a maleic anhydride grafted PE (bioMAPE). The bioMAPE was used as a coupling agent between fillers and polyolefins in a recent study by RISE PFI Trondheim and SINTEF Oslo that looked at clay particles and thermomechanical pulp fibres in composites with HDPE and LDPE. Kraton announced in June 2024 that it had
received Critical Guidance Recognition from the US Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for its CirKular+ C1000 and C1010 Compatibilisation Series and CirKular+ C2000 Performance Enhance- ment Series for use in PE flexible films. The APR Critical Guidance Protocol is a measure for assess- ing recyclability in plastic packaging design. To receive recognition, products must meet the APR’s strict requirements and be tested for a range of design features that affect recycling. Tests under the APR protocol showed that C1000 and C2000 can be used in PE films with up to 5% EVOH with loadings of 2% and 3% respec- tively, and C1010 and C2000 can be used in PE films with up to 10% PA 6 with loadings of 3% and 2% respectively, Kraton reported. CirKular+ additives have previously received the APR Critical Guidance Recognition for use in PP containers and HDPE bottles and have been certified as compat- ible with HDPE and PP container recycling in Europe by Plastics Recyclers Europe and the RecyClass system. Kraton’s compatibilisers are also available as the
CirKular+ ReNew Series that are made with bio-based styrenic block copolymers derived from pine wood pulping by-products and tracked using a mass balance approach. The company achieved ISCC Plus certification for its Belpre, Ohio, US facility in 2024. The company’s facility in Berre, France was certified in 2021. “Bringing local ISCC Plus supply options to our customers will support their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and increase the use of renewable

materials across multiple end uses,” said Pedro Lopes, Kraton Global Vice-President of Strategic Marketing & Product Management. Tisan’s Olebond products are produced via
reactive extrusion processing technology in which maleic anhydride is grafted onto a base polymer chain. The products are used to reduce interfacial surface tension and thereby promote better dispersion of the component such as fillers in polymers or promote interphase between different kinds of polymers. Olebond 7401 HH grade, based on PPH with high MAH content, is used as a coupling agent between polymer and fillers. Its functional groups enhance polarity of PP and improve considerably the bonding between PPH and glass fibre or mineral fillers. Incorporation of 2% Olebond to PPH 30% reinforced with glass fibre greatly increases tensile strength and izod impact values when it is compared with other products without compatibi- liser, said Tisan. Olebond 7402 CL-HH is a chemically modified PE with high MAH content for improving the interphase adhesion of PE to other polymers and flame additives. Tisan said its R&D work has resulted in “extraordinary reactivity and compatibility” and is mostly utilised in the fabrication of cables.
Coupling fibres Tisan’s portfolio also includes ABS-based Olebond 7404 with high MAH content which is designed for providing superior functionalisation between PC and ABS polymer matrix structure. This prevents immiscibility between polymers or reinforcement fillers and ensures increased toughness and highly stable polymers, the company said.
