POLYMER TESTING | TECHNOLOGY

separate overlapping melting peaks, explained Eric Bennett, Account Manager and Technical Specialist at Netzsch Instruments. For mixtures that co-crystallise, such as HDPE and LLDPE, it is nearly impossible to quantify components by peak separa- tion alone, but differences in crystallinity can provide indirect evidence that can be used to estimate quantity. Netzsch trained the model on standardised curves and labeled blends of materials with known components. Early partners provided feedback that helped refine the tool, said Bennett. “Like any AI tool, Quantify improves with more data and feedback. Our roadmap is built on constant iteration – test, learn, improve,” he explained. Today, the tool provides polymer family identifi-

cation and blend-fraction estimates with a typical validation error of approximately 1% for easier-to- identify blends and 3-5% for the more difficult

ones, using a class-level confidence method. Materials that are supported now include PP, HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE, and others (eg, PET, EVA, EVOH, polyamides) will be added in the coming year. “We are looking for partners

to share calibrated blends and to participate in pilot projects in packaging, automotive, E&E, and construction,” said Bennett. Jeol offers an instrument for obtaining information about the components of a compound by pyrolysis–gas chromatography–time-of-flight

mass spectrometry (Py-GC-TOFMS). The method can identify a large number of components, but many of these are not registered in mass spectrum databases, said Bryan Katzenmeyer, Director of Jeol’s MS Business. While identifying unknown compounds previously required time and expert knowledge for structure elucidation, new AI-based
