and reduced physical strain during loading, cleaning, and routine operation – important benefits for labs running frequent melt flow tests.” The Aflow extrusion plastome-
ter from ZwickRoell offers automa- tion when used as a stand-alone instrument or with the company’s testXpert testing software. The instrument can be used for tests according to ASTM D1238, which was updated in February 2023 to support use of force-controlled extrusion plastometers; these had previously been allowed under ISO 1133-1 and 1133-2. A load-controlled plastometer allows automated reaction to filling quantity and material flow during the preheat phase of the test. “This supports use by less experienced techni-
cians, reliable testing during offshift or night production, and reduced training burden in high turnover labs,” noted Donohue. “In plastics compounding and masterbatch production, automated extrusion plastometers are increasingly
used to handle high test volumes across wide MFR ranges while reducing operator dependency and ensuring consistent ASTM D1238 compliance.”
Cone and plate viscometers New from Byk-Gardner is the Byko-visc CP family of cone and plate viscometers for viscosity determination with minimal sample sizes. A low-temperature model from 5 to 75° C offers rapid cooling and heating of the sample plate for room-temperature measurements. A high-temperature model is available for evaluating samples from 50 to
235° C. The cone is automatically lowered onto
the plate and can be switched by bayonet coupling without recalibration. “The cone and plate viscosity measurement is useful in many industries because it ensures a consistent and uniform shear force across the entire sample due to the small sample size and plate/spindle geometry,” said Noah Morgan, Application Specialist, Byk-Gardner USA.
