TWIN SCREW EXTRUDERS | TECHNOLOGY

for colour masterbatches in the AF-Color range. At the same time, flexibility and capacity for small- scale production runs are being enhanced. “It was important for us to implement a solution

that not only accelerates our development work but also facilitates transfer into production,” said Kathrin Portugall, Deputy Production Manager at AF-Color. “The entire workflow was analysed, enabling many potential challenges to be identi- fied and resolved at the concept stage.” One finding is that converting the FSB side feeders from a swivel arm to a movable slide mechanism results in significantly simplified handling, reducing the effort required for changeo- vers. The FSB side feeder in the smaller size 26 was designed with a cooling function for the first time, ensuring low-melting materials can be fed without agglomeration or blockage at the feed inlet. The new line also offers extensive flexibility, making it ideally suited to AF-Color’s broad product portfolio.

Xtrutech applies its metallurgy know-how

Xtrutech is a supplier of spare twin-screw extruder parts for a wide range of brands. Its aftermarket heritage shapes the company’s approach to plastics applications and focuses on areas where it can add targeted value, such as lab-scale extrusion systems for R&D, specialist ancillary equipment, and precision-engineered parts. This enables compounders to adapt to changing formula- tions, improve process robustness, and extend the service life of critical wear parts while continuing to operate. Higher filler contents, abrasive additives, and reformulated chemistries, can significantly accelerate wear on screw elements, barrel liners and shafts. Addressing this effectively requires more than routine, like-for-like replacement of worn parts. “Xtrutech has supported many plastics compounders by applying detailed metallurgy knowledge to real process condi- tions, helping customers select alternative materials and wear solutions better suited to their formulations,” said Daniel Johnson, Regional Manager – Americas. “In many cases, targeted changes in metallurgy have delivered measurable improvements in screw element and liner life, reduced maintenance frequency and more predictable operating performance.” Increased use of recycled polymers and hygroscopic materials, together with higher additive loadings, places greater emphasis on effective removal of moisture, entrained air, and volatiles. By preventing polymer from rising into the vent while still allowing effective evacuation of gases and vapours, Xtrutech says its Vent Port Stuffer helps maintain stable conditions and consistent product quality. This results in improved process stability, reduced risk of vent fouling, and the ability to operate closer to throughput limits.
