Tosaf said that visual design is no longer an
afterthought in plastics part design, but an integral part of material engineering. “Achieving consistent aesthetics today requires a deep understanding of polymers, processing conditions and sustainability constraints, especially when recycled content is involved,” the company explained.
Recyclate limits When working with virgin polymers, consistent base materials enable stable processing and predictable visual results when using special effect masterbatches, such as metallic, pearlescent, fibres, thermochrome, rainbow effects and marble, said Andreas Kruschinski, Head of Sales and Marketing at Tosaf Color Service Germany. In recycled feedstocks, however, variations in colour and quality introduce more constraints. Clear and low-filled recyclate allows many of the same visual effects used in virgin materials, while high filled grey or darker mixed-colour recyclate may limit the possibilities, the company said. To design with these material constraints in
mind, Tosaf applies a structured, data-driven development process. “Creating marble effect
masterbatches for recycled polymers requires deep expertise,” said Annelies Gietema, Product Manager Recycling at Tosaf Benelux. “By analysing the customer’s feedstock, we can design formula- tions that both overcolour the recycled base and generate controlled marble patterns. When needed, UV stabilisation and system design help maintain full recyclability throughout the product’s life cycle.” “As brand owners look to connect aesthetics with sustainability claims, the ability to deliver reliable special-effect masterbatches across diverse material streams is becoming increasingly valu- able,” the company said. Avient said that special effect pigments are
predicted to take a supporting role in the palette of Avient’s ColorForward 2027 colour trend forecast- ing tool, created by Avient’s ColorWorks team. “The 2027 palette leans into soothing colour
and effect concepts and rich, mystical shades, inspired by the search for inner peace and emo- tional balance,” said the company. “Special effects like speckles, interferential shimmers, pearles- cence, and metallics still appear in several aesthet- ics, but their presence now adds softness to
