Q&A
Q: I’M ON A BUDGET. WILL CHANGING MY DIET COST MORE MONEY?
A: Think about what you’re really getting for your budget. A week of home- cooked meals actually costs about the same as one or two takeout meals, so you get much more for your money. You can also recreate those takeout favorites for about a third of the price: I’ll make a homemade version of chicken tikka masala (my family’s favorite) with a jarred sauce and extra veggies.
The more you meal plan, the more you save. Use what’s on sale to drive your recipe choices for the week (stock up on staples that are on sale too). When you shop, you’ll know the purpose for every ingredient so nothing goes to waste.
As you compare prices, be sure to look at the unit cost (the price per ounce or pound) compared to its retail cost (the price of the package). Often the bigger package is the better deal.
Q: WHAT ARE THE NUTRITION RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO ME AT GIANT?
A: Giant Food offers one-on-one consultations for customers who are ready to make a lifestyle change. We translate what you hear from your doctor into what that looks like for your shopping cart. This includes a virtual store tour where we look at healthy, affordable options in every aisle.
We also offer classes on eating for diabetes, heart health, and general health, as well as meal planning on a budget. Our team loves to engage with customers online. We join community group events and coordinate Workplace Wellness programs with area businesses. Our Facebook group, Healthy Living by Giant, is so fun and a great resource.

Q: HOW DO I CREATE BETTER EATING HABITS IN THE NEW YEAR?
A: Instead of big resolutions, focus on small goals like making better food choices at meals or parking farther away to get more steps. This makes it easier to keep going rather than starting a big goal, stopping, and starting over.
Remember that all foods fit. We always say, “Don’t think about what you have to cut out, think about what you can add.” Add a side salad to your pizza or air-fried veggies to your burger. Remember too that no plan works for everyone; it has to make sense for you and your family.
You also have to be open to trying something new! Join us at our online Kickstart summit this month for inspiration.
