This means that when it's time for the first break of the day, all the beds have already been picked once. When the flush is slightly heavier, the waste products - such as CO2 - can be dispersed more quickly if the largest mushrooms are removed. This prevents the mushrooms from quickly developing elongated stalks and starting to ripen too soon. The rest of the mushrooms can grow for another two to six hours, which benefits the weight and the pic- king performance. If pickers receive a bonus for achieving a certain picking performance or - as is sometimes the case abroad - are paid per tray or kilogram, this has immediate benefits. Ano- ther plus is better quality of the mushrooms left on the bed, so that 8 to 10 kg/m2


on one day. This method also flattens peaks in


working hours on busy days, which, in concrete terms, reduces the need to work overtime.


Mistake 3: is not harvested


Not enough inspection Sometimes you see that one manager is in charge of 60 pickers without an assistant and also has to deal with other tasks such as plan- ning production, harvesting, containers and packaging, picking staff etc. Without an assistant, it's only realistically feasible to inspect once or twice a day during harvest. This is not enough! Repetition is the key word in inspection and optimising harvesting practice. Especially when there are lots of differences in a growing room and more pickers with limited experience. If you are in charge of picking, try to change just one aspect each time to avoid panic- king the pickers. This gives them the chance to focus on that one improvement point.
