CULTIVATIONTIPS FUNGIPOINT RH inlet measurement

More and more growers are beginning to realise that in addition to the growing room climate, the inlet climate is also very important. Main- taining the correct evaporation and activity is entirely determined by the difference between the incoming and outgoing air, combined with the air quantity, i.e. the fan speed. Practice shows that the right gro- wing room climate and fan speed alone are not always a guarantee for correct evaporation and activity.

Using RH inlet measurement (temperature and RH) provides insight into the actual evaporation and activity and enables the necessary adjustments to be made. All modern climate control systems have the functionality to measure and optionally regulate the inlet climate.

However, certain aspects must be taken into account to enable correct RH inlet measurement. Firstly, various tests show that the most reliable measurements are obtained by using the measurement principle of a dry and wet bulb sensor. These sensors should be placed in the growing room at a normal working height, near the point where the inlet air enters the room. This is usually at the beginning of the air ducts. It’s very important to place the RH inlet measurement sensors in a practical and correct position. As they dry out faster, maintenance twice a week is needed. Once a week is enough for RH measurement in the growing room.

The inlet air at the beginning of the air ducts is often captured via a well-insulated, angled pipe (e.g. PVC pipe) and directed to the RH inlet measurement. It is important that the air speed over the sensors is 2 m/s with the most commonly applied fan speed (usually 50%). The angle and diameter of the PVC pipe must be adapted to achieve this air speed.

Another important point is to avoid the temperature of the water reservoir being affected by the growing room air. Do this by using a well-insulated water reservoir (e.g. PVC, possibly with a double wall between which the inlet air is blown). The wet bulb sensor must be easily accessible for inspection or to change the wick and for easy access to inspect or refill the water reservoir.

Note: If control is based on the RH inlet measurement, all control actions are also based on this, which makes this the most critical / important measurement in the entire installation!
