seven layers (no catwalk). Rooms are filled with phase 2 compost (common in India), and two flushes are grown in a 45-day cycle. Compost consists of paddy straw (70%) and bagasse (30%). The casing consists of coco peat and ball clay. Freshbowl also has its own cannery (own brand and white label) and produces its own spawn. Photography was not permitted at the farm.
Evergreen Harvest Agro On the evening of the second day, several exhi- bitors visited Evergreen Harvest Agro Products Village in Thiyagarsanapalli (Tamil Nadu), ano- ther modern farm with Dutch-style shelving. Like Fresh Bowl (and several others), Evergreen Harvest Agro Products plays a pioneering role in the sector. Here too, they have their own spawn production facility. Phase 1 takes place on an open floor where compost is turned a maximum of two times to prevent straw shortages before
being filled into the bunkers. Only phase 2 takes place in the tunnels. For phase 3 and the cultivation phase, Evergreen has 58 cultivation rooms. It was a wonderful sight, and the welcome was exceptionally warm.
India on the move The theme of the first edition was ‘India on the mushroom move’, and, according to Bart Aerts and others, that certainly rings true. Production is increasing annually, and expectations are high. In India, it’s common practice to grow in bags, starting with phase 2 compost in the cultivation cell, and a lot of manual labor is involved. For various reasons, the pressure and interest in automation are increasing. It’s unclear how quickly this will happen.
In any case, India is on the mushroom move, and the India Mushroom Summit has earned a well- deserved reputation in India.
