The word ‘together‘ came up several times during our interview with the management of OurCelia (page 38). The new owner of the Venlo spawn factory expressed his disappointment about a certain lack of cooperation, research and innovation in our industry. Too often, self-interest tends to dominate. Despite increasing market pressure and declining numbers of major sector players, the true ‘cooperative spirit’ is lacking. The European mushroom promotion campaign, which is unlikely to be continued, was mentioned as an example. Jan Klerken certainly has a point, especially in the Netherlands where getting everyone on the same page is always difficult. Self-interest often clashes with the common interest. But not always. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the Biblical parable of the Good Samaritan - a resident of what is now roughly the occupied West Bank - who comes to the assistance of a robbed and injured Jewish traveller left for dead at the roadside. The core message, which is also explored in the Hadith, Mahabharata, and the Torah, is to put selfless love and compas- sion above self-interest and prejudice (Samaritans and Jews were enemies in biblical times). Now, I know it might be stretching the point to compare companies in the Dutch mushroom sector - not enemies, after all - with Good Samaritans if they help out a competitor, in this case Kekkilä-BVB (page 10). That solidarity has been seen here before, for example, at the time of the fire at Champi-mer, or when Topterra was flooded. But hey, Christmas is near and it is a cheering thought that in times of need we are willing to help each other, pull together and save the entire sector a lot of misery. In April, we will all come together at the Dutch Mushroom Days again. Almost all the available exhibition space has been booked allready and visitor registration has opened. All candles have been lit for THE event in our industry! I look forward to seeing you all there again, and until then, and certainly in the weeks ahead, I wish you a wonderful festive season, and in 2026 hopefully a little less hatred, and more peace, love and understanding for all of us.
