The blazing fire on the evening of November 5th, as seen from the Geijsterseweg.

services had contained the situation and the site was handed back to the owner. The suspected cause: an electrical short circuit.

Initial response In the meantime, Kekkilä’s team had sprung into action. “The severity of the situation was immediately obvious, so we activated the crisis protocol and set up a crisis centre.” Everyone familiar with the sector knows the critical importance of on time deliveries of casing soil, so that night, countless calls were made to keep operations running. The immediate priority was to secure production flows, as the first Dutch customers were due to receive their delivery of casing as early as 6.30 that same morning.” According to the managers, that would have been impossible without the help of partners Legro and Sterckx. These partners were more than willing to literally and instantly lend a helping hand. “A failure to deliver the casing that day would have had catastrophic consequences for the mushroom growing sector. Growers, composters, transporters and filling companies also showed great understanding for the situation and often

proposed solutions like delaying filling or accepting later deliveries.”

The strength of the sector The next challenge was fulfilling casing orders across Europe and beyond. “Initially, we had to replace 100% of Wanssum’s production, because the site was inaccessible. And at first we also feared we had lost the entire production site, luckily that view was later revised.” After the early hectic hours, the team focused on structural solutions for stock, big bags and product flows. Bulk production was arranged with Legro and Sterckx, using Kekkilä-BVB raw materials and specifications. With a loading line on loan and staff on-site, quality and continuity were ensured. Thanks to this collaboration, customers at home and abroad continued receiving trusted products. Partners provided not only production capacity but also office and dispatch space, enabling close coordination of transport. “Despite being competitors, their support was exceptional, also taking into account that peak days for bulk deliveries are also peak days for them.
