in the strengths of Solmax such as the high levels of customer service, the excellent network, its outstanding quality products and the synergy of the many production companies worldwide that matches the high demands of the market. “There are various nets available on the market today, but quality and proven performance always pays for itself.” According to Örjan, inferior quality nets - often supplied from far distant countries - still frequently tear in prac- tice. “Admittedly our nets can also break, sometimes due to machinery being used incor- rectly. If this happens, the issue is extensively assessed in collaboration with the customer on site or at our lab in Hengelo, but fortunately it is a rare occurrence.”
Sales The growing nets are manufactured and sold from Hengelo as a finished product. So-called jumbo rolls are also supplied to various manufacturers, who further process the rolls and market them in specific countries. They produce and cut the product to size for the end users. “We manage the sales operations of tunnel and glide nets to customers ourselves. Our products are delivered directly to customers but also via various suppliers in the industry worldwide.” Solmax supplies various growing, glide and tunnel nets, tailored to the suit market specifi- cations and needs. For example, growing nets are available based on different shelf lengths and widths. There are also various tunnel and glides nets for phase 1, 2 and 3 in composting. The most heavy-duty net, manufactured for phase I, is so strong ‘it can take the weight of a car, so to speak’!
Capacity and growth During a tour of the immense production hall, we discussed the company’s future with the market manager. Not the easiest of conversati- ons as the noise of the massive rotating wea- ving machines - a reminder of the region’s history of textiles - made wearing earplugs necessary. Örjan sees plenty of potential for cooperation and expansion. “In the US, for example, where the modernisation taking place in mushroom growing is raising our profile, or in Germany, where we have started to expand.” And then the question of whether the product could be improved: could the nets become indestructible? Örjan laughs: “They already are.”
