New GM of Amycel Europe SPAWN
At the end of October, Amycel Europe announced the retirement of General Manager Hubert Hay (65), an industry veteran whose dedication and contributions over the past 30-plus years have been pivotal in shaping the company’s growth and legacy.

commitment, and visionary leadership that have left an indelible mark on the company and the industry at large”.”Hubert’s contributions have been outstanding”, said CEO/President Kyon Kazemi. “His leadership has been instrumental in our growth, and his influence on our team and partners has helped solidify Amycel’s repu- tation as an industry leader. We are deeply gra- teful for his service and wish him the very best with his well-deserved retirement.”
Hubert Hay Mushroom Business had a chance to look back with Hubert on his long mushroom career. In 1983, he started working for Hauser in Vendôme, a Claron test unit where they also tested existing strains. Moving on to Production
Manager for spawn production in ’86, he became GM of Claron. In this function, he visited many customers in Europe, selling some 5 million liters of spawn in France, Spain and The Netherlands. At this time, the glass bottle sys- tem was becoming obsolete, when, in 1993, Amycel purchased Claron, and the whole facility in Vendôme was turned into a state-of-the-art modern spawn plant. Looking back on those days, Hubert is thankful for the responsibility given to him by Shah Kazemi, to lead the com- pany into the future, starting production in 1994. “It was a massive investment for Amycel, and we started almost from scratch.” He regards the tremendous impact of the Heirloom brown Agaricus variety, not only for Amycel, but for the mushroom industry as a whole, as perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the last 30 years. “It has changed the whole market for brown mushrooms.
