products are already suitable for the production of ornamental and bedding plants, says Guido Linders from Kekkilä-BVB. “It is especially important that we all work together and that the entire value chain is involved. After all, a sustainable organization of mushroom cultiva- tion is in the interest of everyone involved.” Kekkilä-BVB is also part of the EU-supported Bioschamp project (for more about this see MB125 and MB114).
Packaging Later in the afternoon, representatives of the packaging companies Saica-Flex and Magic Pack GmbH discussed the topic of mushroom pack- aging. They have been working on the ‘ideal’ packaging solution for mushrooms for years, but the subject is now more important in the wake of the new packaging regulation. “There have already been attempts to sell mushrooms loose, which has led to huge markdowns. Similar attempts with containers and cardboard lids have
also failed, because retailers did not find it hygienic. Renouncing plastic and therefore a practical implementation of the packaging regu- lation is and remains problematic for sensitive goods such as mushrooms. That is why we must fight for an exemption,” said the BDC chairman.
Goldenstedter Bio-Pilze The company OM Pilze invited participants for the traditional company tour on the last day. The company, founded in 2010, has expanded several times over the past ten years and has also had a separate organic division under the name Goldenstedter Bio-Pilze for two years. Marketing takes place exclusively through the growers’ cooperative ELO eG, based in Lang- förden-Vechta. Sustainability is a top priority at the emerging mushroom farm, manager Matthias Surmann emphasized in his company presenta- tion. Over the years, the location has been gradually equipped with state-of-the-art PV systems and a cogeneration plant.
