The 75th T

Jahrestagung

Interest groups of mushroom growers are sparse these days. It is therefore remarkable that the “Bund Deutscher Champignon- und Kulturpilzanbauer” (BDC) held its annual meeting for the 75th

participants and supply companies, the club is alive and well.

he venue for this milestone was the Parkhotel in Heilbronn, in the Ger- man state of Baden-Württemberg. The reason for chosing this location

was nearby Schwaigern, where the new company of the German mushroom superpower Pilzland is located, but more about that later. The Parkhotel is a typical conference hotel, with many rooms and spaces for meetings. The BDC usually has a good choice of hotels, given the quality of what is offered.

Tradition and superheroes The meetings of the BDC, and therefore the annual meeting as well, are characterized by a fixed and strict program. On Thursday, the members of the BDC get together for a series of closed meetings. There will also be a closed member meeting on Friday, but then the public part will start at half past eleven, where everyone who has a connection with the German

mushroom sector is welcome (see middle pages for the group picture). Traditionally, many Dutch sector representatives are present, because that is where the supplying industry is located, such as composters, spawn and casing soil companies and hardware suppliers. Right on time, Hans Deckers, chairman of the BDC, kicked off the public part by welcoming everyone and announcing the first speaker. That speaker was - almost a tradition as well - Michael Legrand from the ‘Grüne Medienhaus’. Legrand explained that his organization wants to reach as many consumers as possible through a budget from the BDC and persuade them to buy mushrooms. This generally works quite well, and this year a film about mushrooms was made that can be viewed on the website www.gesun- de-pilze.de. The short film discusses the health aspects of mushrooms, but also the fact that many mushrooms in Germany are produced regionally,
