membership and income.

growers now pay 200 euros for membership per year, and commercial non-growers (suppliers, for example) pay 400 euros. We are still checking whether we will allow sponsorship. In addition to the usual meetings, ESSMI will also regularly organize study trips. The first, to China, is on the planning board. We remain essentially a low-budget association for growers.” According to the chairman, there are three pos- sible development scenarios for the near future, depending on membership and income: 1. The association will remain as it is now, with a few more members (about 70 HLP members have already registered up till now).

2. With more members and financial strength, ESSMI could also initiate research and e.g. marketing mushrooms (products).

3. The most ambitious scenario assumes the above, plus the establishment of regional/

international offices and further growth.

To gain more members, the association is now considering additional membership benefits, e.g. access to social media and content, and discounts on Mycelia Academy courses (see page 30).

Visit to CNC Exotic Mushrooms After a presentation about the company in the hotel, the visitors left for the location of CNC Exotic Mushrooms (CEM) B.V. on the morning of September 13 in Heerewaarden. This internationally operating producer and sup- plier of substrate for the cultivation of exotics was founded in 2004 in Hedel, by CNC and Bert Rademakers (until then Fungi 2000), and experi- enced rapid growth in turnover, production capacity and product range from the start. CEM, as part of CNC Holding, was sold to Sun European Partners in 2020, when Rademakers had already sold his shares (45%) in CEM to CNC, to focused fully on his new company Mycelium Materials. At the beginning of 2022, a new CEM production location was opened in a former plastic factory in Heerewaarden, because the facility in Hedel had outgrown its capacity. In December 2022, busi- ness unit manager Willem van Hassel left for Peka Kroef. The company, a European leader in the sector, has significantly expanded its capacity in the past year and produces high-quality substrates in three shifts with a bulk sterilization system, mainly for the cultivation of shiitake and Pleurotus eryngii. According to sources, the quality of the substrate produced by CEM suffered for some time, partly due to the many (personnel) changes and implementation of new production technology.
