NEWS Mertens celebrates 70 years F or Mertens, September 29th and 30th was all about the 70th
company anniversary. The well-known supplier for the horticulture, green ánd mushroom sector celebrated the anniversary weekend at its head office in Horst, The Netherlands.
From its Limburg roots, Mertens has developed from a local to a national player with international activities. “We characterize ourselves as a down-to-earth, committed and, above all, trusted partner with expert knowledge, particularly for the horticulture, garden retail and green sector. Our focus is on offering a total package that, in addi- tion to a wide range and fast delivery, also provides technical advice and guidance. We have been working with the best manufacturers for years and can therefore offer a powerful package with trusted brands,” according to management, Mart Verheijen and Jeroen Kuijpers. The story began in 1953, when fruit grower Jan Mertens started horticultural supply in Baarlo. Various growth steps, relocations and takeovers of fellow suppliers followed in the years that followed. Initially within the North Limburg region, in 1994 a supply company for the German Lower Rhine region was established, and further expansion across the Netherlands followed. The activities for most market segments have now been concentrated on the Dutch and
German-speaking countries for many years, and in the mushroom cultivation sector, Mertens is a worldwide player. Since 1996, Mertens has been part of the Marubeni Group: a solid and strategic shareholder providing a solid basis for the continuous development which is focused on biological solutions and bio-base products. On Friday, September 29th
, more than 600 customers and
manu facturers came to Horst for a festive afternoon and evening. On Saturday, it was the turn of the 140 employees, who celebrated this wonderful milestone together with their partners.

CNC celebrates 70 years as well
A
nother jubilarian in The Netherlands in September was CNC, which celebrated its 70th
anniversary at the site in Milsbeek, with a small scale congress for customers and
relations, and a party in the evening of Friday 22 September, for everyone who works at CNC and is, or was, involved in some way with the company. And that is an impressive list of people because CNC’s origin dates back to 20 November 1953. That’s when eight mushroom growers established the predecessor of CNC (these days, the abbreviation stands for ‘Circular Natural Compost’). See the interview with Eric van Asselt in Mushroom Business 120 for more on the history and plans of the company.
