in recent years however (in 2019 this was still 3,700 tons). Over the past five years, the import of (exotics) spawn from China to the EU has increased rapidly, from around 500 tons in 2017 to more than 9,000 tons in 2022. Spain is by far the largest importer.

Study trip 2024 After maximum cadmium (EU) levels in cultiva- ted mushrooms were discussed, the destination of the ESSMI study trip in 2024 was presented. As part of the preparation, representatives of the Chinese (machinery) supplier Zhengzhou Satrise Industry Co., Ltd. made a tour through Europe in May of this year, during which various HLP growers were visited (Pleunis, Deckers, Paulissen, VEME, Paddestoelrijk). Satrise, in collaboration with CFNA and ESSMI, will host a program from April 16 to 26, 2024, that will introduce travelers in Henan Province (where Satrise is located) to the exotic cultivation of this region, that is famous for its shiitake production. A two-day conference, four days of company visits and three days to see something of the area will be included.

HLP to ESSMI After the event, we spoke with chairman Kasper Moreaux about the new ESSMI association, which was founded in June of this year and which essentially pursues the same goal as the HLP, namely the preservation and pursuit of the pro- gress of European exotic mushroom cultivation. “The Hessische Landesfachgruppe Pilzanbau did not ‘officially’ exist, but was run as an association nevertheless. Now there is an official association with formal, public articles of association and a provisional board, a chairman and a company director, Evelin Krollop. Furthermore, just like with the HLP, we rely a lot on volunteers. ESSMI is registered in Germany, because there is no European legal form as of yet. The financial reserves of the HLP have been transferred to the new association.” According to Moreaux, these months are mainly used to get the association on track administra- tively and organizationally. “Furthermore, not much will change for the time being, except that the working language is English (instead of German) and meetings can also take place outside German-speaking countries. The contribution had already been increased, and
