A fantastic story to tell

t doesn’t matter where you are on the globe, if you ask a farmer what their mission statement is – sorry for the market- ing terminology – the answer is pretty straightforward. Putting food on the table. With great effort, meager rewards and sometimes under the intense scrutiny of society and regulators. As more and more consumers no longer recognise or value food because of its abundance, it’s easy for them to focus on the negatives of our industry. Welfare issues, envi- ronmental pressure or antibiotic use are more at the top of their mind than food security. Farmers feel that pres- sure and are easily pushed into the defensive. Sometimes we forget that we have a fantastic story to tell, not just about providing food but providing the best food possible. We have to keep telling that sto- ry, I realised listening to a recent presentation. Professor David Hughes, professor of food market- ing at Imperial College London, said consumers still don’t understand the myriad of health bene- fits of natural eggs. The sector needs to celebrate eggs which are considered a gold standard because they are almost the closest you can get to 100% complete, as far as protein goes. And we can be proud of how these eggs are produced too, as we learn from the Egg Farmers of Canada in this issue of Poultry World. As their Sustainability Blueprint states, compared to five decades ago 50% more eggs are now being produced in Canada, while the sector’s overall environmental footprint is almost 50% smaller. A fantastic story indeed. Fabian Brockötter, editor Poultry World
