n late July 2021 the news broke that nobody wanted to hear. African Swine Fever (ASF) had taken yet an- other step. It had crossed the oceans to end up in the Americas. Tests by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service had detected it in two provinces in the Dominican Republic, which was soon to be followed by more provinces. What followed were scenes sadly all too familiar from many other countries in Asia and Europe: dead pigs, people in protective white suits and cullings everywhere. The big question, however, is what is next. I’m not too optimistic about the chances of neighbouring Haiti

staying free of ASF. The country is one of the poorest in the world and lacks proper (veterinary) infrastructure. Yet ASF having landed on an island also offers an opportunity to keep it there and not let it spread any further. What is needed from now on is absolute transparency, cooperation, determination and preferably knowledge about the
route of infection. Once that is all in place, there might be a chance to jointly keep it on Hispaniola island. Should the virus hit mainland America as well, I’m afraid that ASF may dominate headlines in the years to come.
