LEADER ▶▶▶ The drone-suggestion-box

farmers with a bigger field-area, over 100 hectares, are most interested in working with drone technology. They see the ad- vantage of a drone scanning the fields a few times a week, and by spotting any abnormalities, diseases or pests at an early stage, they can respond very early. And save a lot of time, money, chemicals and fertiliser by just doing what is necessary.

At the same time, we have some idea of a drone’s possibilities. Just imagine; counting the number of plants (trees, heads of lettuce …) when they pop out of the soil. Or the local release of insects to tackle pests biologically. Or on impossible steep fields (mountain walls, rice fields) to fight local diseases or scare off birds or insects. The drone could be a fly- ing scarecrow. And much more could be possible. I predict that in the coming years we will surprise our- selves about new drone applications that make the farmer very happy. The drone is here, and comparable with the rise of the tractor, some 100 years ago. And just like with the tractors it will be the large ‘entrepreneur’ farmers that will have a prominent role in discovering the drone’s potential. History will therefore repeat itself.

Bas Van Hattum, editor Future Farming

e are not there yet: but the drone is on its way to becoming indispensable in our agriculture, just like a wheeled tractor and a seed drill. And just like that tractor and seed drill, the drone will soon be part of an (arable) farmer’s standard equipment. It’s not surprising that drone-development is most popular by larger farmers. Research shows that arable
