CASE STUDY A look at improving supply chain reliability in practice
Proagrica implemented a similar bespoke system to support a major food manufacturer. The consistency and reliability of the oats received into its processing plant needed to improve, and pressure from retailers had put its contract and that of its farmer suppliers at risk.
The company’s disparate datasets made it almost impossible to spot any discrepancies or weak points with its farmers. An in-depth study
of its operations would be time- consuming and labour-intensive, with no guarantees.
Proagrica provided the integration and analytics needed to merge disparate data into one effective insight resource. By accessing data from producers, the factors affecting the quality of oats were highlighted with farmers subsequently influencing growing protocols and specifications.
The crop is now produced under more controlled conditions, with vital input from farmers and agronomists in the field and ‘hullability’ ratios improved at processing stage. These improvements have resulted in farmers increasing returns from the same yields through more accurate delivery of in-spec produce and the processor receiving greater consistency and better quality.
Data Insight What can it do for the farm and its supply chain?
Planning and purchasing decisions
For example, providing data on the variance in rotation plans captured by farmers over the years to improve forecasting reduces waste on farm and improves efficiency for the benefit of all participants.
Disease risk monitoring
Data on weather conditions and varietal weakness at field level identifies at-risk traits quickly to stem outbreaks, reducing the need for costly disease control and increasing predictability of yield.
Agronomy visibility
Sharing progress of seasonal activities helps to refine management strategies and increase profitability through better management of crop growth and disease risks.
Strengthening relationships
Permissioned famers’ cropping data helps to review account purchase data to ensure discussions are relevant for both farmers and suppliers, building trust through a common purpose.
Targeted promotion
External and internal data feeds can suggest products and services which are highly relevant to farmers’ immediate circumstances, ensuring improved buying experience and helping develop more robust relationships.
Speaking on the trend towards greater data sharing, Graeme McCracken, Managing Director of Proagrica, encouraged all businesses to strive towards stronger more robust relationships by adopting high-quality market intelligence via permissioned data collection.
“Supply chains adopting these practices enable the participating farms and supply businesses to achieve substantial competitive advantage without incurring significant investment costs. Through the use of permissioned data, these supply chains enable farmers and their suppliers to proactively identify and adapt to threats and opportunities as they occur, rather than receiving a post-mortem delivered via traditional conversations and market research reports. By tailoring product offerings and pricing strategies in-season, revenues can be increased significantly whilst permitting farmers to derive maximum value from products. Integrated data solutions optimise the use of scarce resources and improve farming productivity to meet an ever-increasing global food demand.”
