Amino acid digestibility of fly prepupea meal Poultry-based PAPs for pigs
Researchers oat Hunan Normal University in China studied the digestibility of amino acids in housefly and black soldier fly prepupea meal fed to pigs. Ten pigs fitted with a T-cannula in the distal ileum (with an average initial body weight of 25.05 kg) were housed individually in metabolism cages equipped with a feeder and a nipple drinker. The pigs were randomly as- signed to one of two diets formulated to con- tain 976.7 g/kg of HF or BSF as the sole source of nitrogen. A nitrogen-free (N-free) diet was also formulated to estimate the basal ileal en- dogenous loss (BEL) of AA. All experimental di- ets contained 2 g/kg of titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. The daily feed allowance was offered in three equal meals that were fed at 08:30, 14:00 and 19:30. Each experimental period lasted for 7 days, the initial 4 d for diet acclimation, followed by 3 d for ileal digesta collection and the digesta samples were col- lected continuously for 12 h. The results showed that the CIAD of all AA for HF and BSF were higher than 0.726 and 0.641, respectively. The values for the CISD of all AA ranged from

0.870 to 1.608 and from 0.767 to 1.177 for HF and BSF, respectively. Moreover, the values for the CIAD of all AA in HF were greater (P < 0.05) than in BSF. The dispensable AA accounted for most of the endogenous fraction and the BEL of proline was the greatest. The values for the CISD of all AA except methionine and cysteine in HF were also greater (P < 0.05) than in BSF. It is concluded that the digestibility of all AA in HF is greater than in BSF in pigs.

India: call for release of cottonseed
With animal feed prices in the country rising, animal feed manufacturers have called on the state-run Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to release cotton seed stock onto the market. The release of cottonseed stock can ease cotton oil prices as well as animal feed prices, as animal feed manufacturers will get additional raw ma- terial for producing animal feed. During the 2019-20 cotton season starting in October 2019, CCI procured 3.1 million tonnes of cotton bales of 170 kilograms each (to date) and pro- curement is expected to exceed 10 million tonnes by the end of the season. From these cotton bales, CCI has so far extracted over 200,000 tonnes of cottonseed, which has not been released onto the market because the price of cottonseed has reached USD$ 40 per quintal, compared to USD$ 34 per quintal recorded in December 2019.
Distorted cotton market
Head of research at Edelweiss Agri Services & Credit, Prerana Desai, said that cottonseed
prices have rallied since December 2019 as there was less availability on the market. Dur- ing the same period, the CCI has engaged in major buying. Due to this aggressive behav- iour by the CCI, the market has been distorted. With lower production, firm oil prices and high demand, we expect prices to remain high in the short term until the new mustard crop ar- rives on the market, accroding to Desai. Desai also added that, due to weak demand and profit booking across the counter, cottonseed oil and cake prices will drop back to the minimum level of USD $ 34 a quintal.
Cottonseed auction
An CCI official, under the condition of anonym- ity, said that since November 2019 the corpo- ration has bought over 12% of cotton entering the market with a minimum support price (MSP) of USD$ 79 a quintal from all states, ex- cept for Tamil Nadu and Odisha. The official further added that in order to ensure that farmers get remunerative rates and as the
prices have dropped to earlier levels, the CCI is going to hold auctions to sell cottonseed, Sandeep Bajoria, chairman of All India Cotton- seed Crushers Association (AICOSCA), said. Small and medium-sized mills are continuous- ly buying due to low supplies. Also, high prices of imported oil are helping local mills crush more this season. Prices have rallied and now we expect the rise and fall to be limited to 1%- 2%, Bajoria added. The spot market of cotton- seed oil cake has recorded an increase of 7% as compared to the same period last season.
Researchers at Wageningen UR studied the nutrient composition, ileal and total tract di- gestibility and nutritional value of poultry- based PAPs in growing pigs. The results indi- cate that poultry meals generally have a 5-15% higher protein content with about equal digestibility compared to meat meal and meat-and-bone meal of unspecified animal origin in feed tables. Moreover, the amino acid pattern and the di- gestibility of protein and fat in poultry meal was related to the ash (bone) content in the product. Poultry blood meal deviates in amino acid and mineral content from blood meal from pigs and ruminants. Overall, this study provides new data on digestibility and nutri- tional value for the use of poultry-based PAPs in pig diets. Inclusion of up-to-date values for nutrient content and digestibility of these poultry by-products in feed tables will allow their optimal use in pig diets when future EU legislation allows the use of PAPs in farm animal diets.
