Brazil bans three growth promoters used in pig production

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Live- stock and Supply (MAPA) has prohibit- ed three growth promoters: tylosin, tiamulin and lincomycin, for use in pig production. Normative Instruction Nº 1 (2020) banned the use of these perfor- mance- enhancing additives. The main reason for the ban is that these antibi- otics are classified as being of great im- portance for human medicine. Charli Ludtke, technical director of the Brazilian Pig Production Association (ABCS) said that the ban fits into a global trend and, as a result, Brazil’s pig production is now aligned with poli- cies supported by the World Organiza- tion for Animal Health (OIE), the UN’s

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organiza- tion (WHO). Ludtke said, “Brazil’s pig sector has already anticipated this rule, so we do not expect to see a huge im- pact. Our industry has developed sev- eral initiatives in order to persuade farmers to use alternatives and thus improve on-farm biosecurity.” Produc- ers and companies will have until 21 February to communicate with MAPA and inform them of the number and date of the last batches imported or manufactured, as well as the remain- ing quantity in stock. Companies will have until 21 April to collect the re- maining stocks from their clients.

China’s need for feed and feed ingredi- ents has increased as its livestock sec- tor has grown. US manufacturers have, however, had difficulty registering new feed products and facilities with Chi- nese authorities. In addition, exporters of DDGS face burdensome product li- censing procedures, resulting in export delays. according to the US Trade Rep- resentative, the Phase One agreement addresses these issues and provides US companies with streamlined access to the Chinese market.
