School Transportation News Published by STN Media Group

Elmore County Schools in Alabama will be receiving $1.07 million annually for the next three years from the state, to replace any school buses that are under 10 years old. Read the wire report at stnonline.com/go/a2.

Excellent news. Fleet renewal is available to all Alabama schools, but it’s up to local systems to finance, if they are catching up their fleet. Facebook/Alan Beck

An article from Richard Fischer explored the effect stop-arm cameras are having on student safety and analyzed the regularity of incidents involving illegal passing of school buses, which have killed or injured many students. Read the full blog at stnonline.com/go/a3.

For cameras to have an impact follow up enforcement of violators is a must. Law enforcement resources are stretched very thin, particularly, in my area. Facebook/Eric D. Henson

A school bus driver and Jefferson County School District in Louisville, Kentucky, are both being sued following the release of video footage showing a student being dragged by the bus. Read the report at stnonline.com/go/a4.

As someone who supervised bus drivers the human error regardless of training can occur due to the stress of student behaviors and that was definitely happening. Facebook/Crystal Siltman

I can’t believe [the bus driver] didn’t even look. I always make sure the students are at least 10 feet away before I close the door. The person that trained me to be a driver said the other day that when you are loading or unloading, all of your attention should be on the student getting on or off the bus and any traffic that may be around. Facebook/Joseph Osborne

Absolutely horrifying. I am so thankful for every driver who gets stubbornly serious about safety and doesn’t let anything distract them during the most crucial point of the bus ride: loading and unloading! You cannot relax and become complacent ... not once! Facebook/Chris Ryman

Josh Cohen, a former mayor for Annapolis, Maryland, and currently the director of policy for EV charging firm Greenlots, retweeted a STN article covering one of the panels at ACT Expo last month in Long Beach, California, where he and other electric vehicle industry professionals met to discuss the process of purchasing Evs and gave advice to districts looking to electrify their school bus fleets.
