Meanwhile, Shannon Evans recently retired

from the Clark County School District in Las Ve- gas, Nevada. Seven years ago, she assumed the position as executive director of transportation for the nation’s fifth largest school district. At the same time, there were two other retirements in her office staff, including her assistant director. “I realized this was an opportunity, not a

challenge,” Evans said. “I came up through the ranks, so I had a historical knowledge of the department. That knowledge is huge, but one weakness we had was that we didn’t know what it’s like to run a school. If we don’t under- stand that side, we can’t improve. I also needed someone at the table who understood what the impact is on a child with disabilities when we push the ride time from 60 to 70 minutes, or we’re considering wrist bands for Kindergarten students, or what the principal has to do when a bus is missing.” Evans chose Jennifer Vobis to step in and pro-

vide that guidance. “I’d worked with Jennifer in her role as a director in special education. In her

former job, she arranged a lot of transportation for the students. Her perspective on where we could improve our service, her understanding of Indi- vudalied Education Program compliance issues, and many other things that happen on the school side was just what we needed,” Evans recalled. Vobis was named the new executive director this summer, and she said she realizes how lucky she was to have Evans as her mentor. “I started out as a special education teacher,” Vobis recalled. “Shannon and I had a good working relationship, and I realized that working in transportation was an opportunity to try something new. Shannon is an innova- tor. I learned so much from her, but she also allowed me to try new things.”
