ith the new school year underway, school districts throughout the U.S. are experiencing the worst driv- er shortage in recent memory if not ever, one driven primarily by health and economic factors relating to the
COVID-19 pandemic. The shortage has led to intense and cre- ative recruitment efforts that include monetary incentives. Cook-Illinois Corporation, the largest school bus contrac-
tor operating in Chicagoland, has implemented an incentive program that includes vacations and even a new vehicle. The Cook-Illinois Corporation has 18 locations with 2,200 buses that transport more than 200,000 students daily with 2,700 bus driv- ers and school bus monitors. “The driver shortage is nothing new for the transportation in- dustry,” noted Julius Ceaser, recruiting director for Cook-Illinois.
