Treating drivers and staff well might not completely solve employee shortages, but these industry professionals prove it can go a long way

Written By Carol Brzozowski W 32 School Transportation News • OCTOBER 2021

ith the new school year underway, school districts throughout the U.S. are experiencing the worst driv- er shortage in recent memory if not ever, one driven primarily by health and economic factors relating to the

COVID-19 pandemic. The shortage has led to intense and cre- ative recruitment efforts that include monetary incentives. Cook-Illinois Corporation, the largest school bus contrac-

tor operating in Chicagoland, has implemented an incentive program that includes vacations and even a new vehicle. The Cook-Illinois Corporation has 18 locations with 2,200 buses that transport more than 200,000 students daily with 2,700 bus driv- ers and school bus monitors. “The driver shortage is nothing new for the transportation in- dustry,” noted Julius Ceaser, recruiting director for Cook-Illinois.
