ROBYN OWENS Transportation Supervisor Pittsburg Unified School District, Calif.

Robyn Owens was 18 years

old when she applied for the position of bus aide at the Pittsburg Unified School District. It fit into her college schedule, but she was hesitant

when approached about becom- ing a school bus driver. “I was not sure

if I could drive a 40-foot vehicle,” she recalled. “I was the youngest staff member and she said to me, ‘Kid, you can do it and you will be great.’” Owens continued to drive for the next 19 years, trans-

porting junior high school students. In 2015, she became certified as a school bus driver instructor and was promoted to dispatcher in 2018. She became the trans- portation supervisor for the district a year later. “To know that I play a role in making a difference

in children’s lives and seeing my students and former students succeed with their education is the favorite part of my job,” said Owens. “It’s a rewarding feeling to know that my job has a lasting positive effect on the community.”

The 25-year veteran of the industry continues to strive for personal and departmental growth. She stated that every day is an adventure as she not only manages transportation staff but also engages with parents, and the district to addresses concerns and issues. She also acts as a dispatcher or driver when needed. Owens added she is proud of her district’s commitment to electric vehicles. “We have a solar farm that provides charging for our fleet that truly makes us zero emissions,” she said. “I would like to continue to push the envelope with technology and green practices. We will make the world a better place, one school bus route at a time.” Owens cited an open-door policy as greatly bene-

fitting her and her staff. “We also encourage our fellow school districts [leaders] to come by and see the great environment we’ve created,” she continued. “It’s some- times hard to imagine what all the new technology can look like or feel like, so we are always open to helping others get moving in that direction. Understanding the community you serve makes a huge difference.”
