9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. | Frisco 3 ¢Head Starts & Early Childhood Transportation Forum Leadership and Collaboration Presenter: Jay Thurber Join a discussion with Head Start transporters at agencies and school districts to share information and resources, as well as answer questions and promote transparency to increase safety and convenience for student riders and their families.


10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. ¢Hands-on School Bus Evacuations for Students with Disabilities & Preschoolers (at Frisco ISD) Specialized Training Instructors: Denny Coughlin, Launi Harden, Aaron Harris & Russell Newbold This comprehensive event held at Frisco ISD features classroom learning and hands-on training on properly and safely planning for the evacuation of students with special needs and preschoolers during an emergency. Attendees will work through best practices for creating an evacuation plan. This includes the identification of disabilities, the training necessary for dispatch and more. The event will then move outside to four stations for hands-on training: belt-cutting and drag blankets; fire extinguishers; familiarization with the bus and manual wheelchair lift; and a timed evacuation drill that will test attendees’ abilities to evacuate “students” secured in CSRS and wheelchairs, all while the bus is filled with “smoke” via a fog machine. A debrief of the exercises will follow. (Pre-registration is required. Transportation & lunch are provided.)


11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Frisco 1 ¢PBIS on the Bus & Creating Behavior Plans Operations & Safety Presenter: Amy Tiedens Learning how to use positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) on the school bus will assist transportation staff on how to interact and build a good working relationship with students who have emotional behavior disorders (EBD). Attendees will learn how to teach EBD students “Positive Bus Expectations,” and the bus staff will learn how to recognize the students for following the expectations.


11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Ranger/Sea Biscuit/Traveller ¢What First-Time Transportation Directors Need to Know About Special Education Law & Policy Presenter: Pete Meslin Are you a recent school principal who is new to student transportation? Even if you were a hands-on administrator who worked with the transportation department, there are many nuances to learn about school bus operations, regulations, training, driver certifications and more. The learning curve is even steeper with regard to transporting students with disabilities. And if you’re brand-new to a school setting, you really have your work cut out for you. This session provides an overview of what it means to be a student transportation director who is suddenly in charge of providing service for our most vulnerable student population. It also provides a good starting point for the more in-depth seminar, “Understanding the Foundations of Special Needs Transportation.”


11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Frisco 3 ¢Using ‘MyPeers’ Head Start Resources Leadership & Collaboration Presenter: Steve Russell MyPeers is an online resource available to all Head Start transporters to assist them with understanding federal requirements and implementing improvements into the operations. It acts as a supplement to the Early Childhood Knowledge and Learning Center (ECKLC). Learn more about this community and how you can utilize it.


12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. | North Parking Lot ¢IEE Sensing Child Detection Product Demo Learn about how the new Life Detection Assistance System (LiDAS) uses sensors to detect sleeping children on school buses. (Located outside near TSD registration.)


2:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. | Frisco 1 ¢Understanding the Foundations of Special Needs Transportation Operations & Safety Facilitator: Kathleen Furneaux Panelists: John Benish & Julie Jilek This informative panel of experienced industry experts will explore “why we do what we do” to provide safe and effective transportation to our most vulnerable students. Interactive discussions will focus on the foundations of IDEA and regulations, collaboration with special educators and operations.
