There have been times during this school year that we have had to use not only all of the transportation staff, including office and mechanics, but we also pulled in drivers and office staff from other departments within the district, including our assistant

superintendent.” -Donnie Ryan, Mustang Public Schools in Oklahoma

Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeil said the district can’t offer competitive wages to school bus drivers in the current labor market. Meanwhile, Ryan

at Mustang Schools in Oklahoma said his shortage is not as bad as at other districts in the area, thanks to a low turnover rate. However, he said when drivers are absence due to sickness, COVID-19, personal or family issues, appoint- ments, family deaths, etc., it makes it hard to ensure every route is covered on varying days. “There have been times during this school year

that we have had to use not only all of the transporta- tion staff, including office and mechanics, but we also pulled in drivers and office staff from other depart- ments within the district, including our assistant su- perintendent. Luckily, this has been a rarity, though,” he said.

Carnes in Oregon added

that his district is short about three drivers to fill all routes and athletic trips needed. He noted that drivers are guaranteed five hours with a spilt shift and an open mid-day. The dis- trict also pays to train, and offers more hours based on seniority. ●
